Naturally I’ve been thinking about the direction our country is headed.  There are so many things I would change if I could.  If only people could see how destructive all the hateful talk is to everyone around.  We cannot continue to put down one group of people in order to make our own group more powerful.  What is going to happen tomorrow (or whatever day the votes are finally tallied)?  What if the candidate we don’t want to be in power becomes the next president?  Are we going to continue to put down certain groups of people?  Is our nation going to remain divided?

I have been struggling with some fear about the future of our country.  My fears started several years ago.  It had gotten to the point that I was having nightmares and waking up unable to sleep.  I asked my pastor and others close to me to pray for me and I began to be more intentional about praying before I went to sleep.  I also prayed a lot when I would wake up from these nightmares.  I refuse to go back to that heart wrenching fear!  That is not the way God wants us to live.  Praise the Lord, I no longer have the nightmares. I don’t let the fears consume my thinking like I once did.  I have learned to refocus my mind on Jesus.  Before the crucifixion Jesus tells the disciples that the Father will send the Holy Spirit. In John 14:27 He says:

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you  Not as the world gives do I give to you.  Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Things were changing in the world of the disciples, and just like our world today, it didn’t look good.  Jesus said do not let your hearts be troubled.  If we do not steer our hearts toward faith in God, they will naturally be full of fear.  2 Corinthians 10:5 says:

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

I know I come back often to this verse about taking our thoughts captive.  It is so very important that we do not give up on training our minds to think the right thoughts.  We will live a much more peaceful life if we are not constantly thinking that God is going to let some great catastrophe over take us.  Instead, remember Philippians 4:8-9

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me – practice these things and the God of peace will be with you.

When we are upset by things going on in the world, we need to remember to take it to God right away (Philippians 4:6-7) and God will give you peace that will guard your hearts and minds.  Wow, God will guard our hearts!  Romans 8:31 says:

What then shall we say to these things?  If God is for us, who can be against us?

The rest of Romans 8 goes on to talk about all kinds of bad things that can happen (verse 35), and Paul says that nothing can separate us from Christ’s love.  Then in verse 37 he says we are more than conquerors over all these things through Jesus!

So enough of my ramblings!  Lets keep our faith in God.  He can still do a great work in our country.  It may not be a political work.  Maybe He will use the political trouble to wake us up to our spiritual needs.  The political division could very well be the thing that God uses to bring about a revival in our land. Psalm 85:6 says:

Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You?  Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us Your salvation.

Lord, please forgive me!  I have not put You first. I have let other distractions take my eyes off You. I have not guarded my heart from the fear that the enemy wants me to be consumed with. Please shine out of my life so that others will see You and experience Your love and forgiveness resulting in salvation.  Nothing in this world can replace the relationship we have with You.  Please work in our country to bring about salvation. Work in us as individuals to keep our eyes on you and respond in repentance and obedience. We will give You the glory and praise in all circumstances!

As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.
